Happy, Happy Birthday!

I cant believe that this little baby…

thomas babyHas turned into this big boy!!

Thomas christmasI cant believe five years have passed so quickly.  I have learned so much in the years of being Thomas’ mommy.  He is such a special little boy and has already touched so many lives and hearts.  I can’t wait to see who he becomes as he gets older.  That said this birthday seems a little bittersweet to me.  I am so excited at the new experiences this year will bring,  T-ball and Kindergarten, new friends, but at the same time I’m a little sad that my baby REALLY isn’t a baby anymore, he’s not even a toddler, and soon won’t even be a preschooler, he’s a boy!

So, since his birthday is on the 20th, here’s a list of 20 things I love about Thomas…

1.  He is very loving.  He must tell me he loves me at least ten times a day and always wants another hug and kiss before I can leave.

2.  I never taught him to but he calls me Mama.  This may sound odd to you but I think it’s sweet.  To this day my own mom refers to her mom as Mama, I think it reminds me of a simpler time.

3.  He will eat almost anything as long as Dave is eating it too.  This includes goat, tongue, pickled asparagus…

4.  He has always been a good patient.  He sits nicely in the dentist’s chair, he never throws a fit about getting a shot at the doctor’s office, and as he has gotten older he is a great medicine taker.

5.  When he prays he always says how much he loves everyone he knows, this goes on for a LONG time.  If you encourage him to move on he’ll tell you he’s not done.

6.  He has a genuine love and very special relationship with his Auntie.

7.  He loves to sing in the car.

8.  He does not like messes.

9.  He tries to be a good big brother.

10.  If you call him Tom or Tommy he truly thinks you don’t know his name and he will introduce himself!  I taught him well, no nicknames in this house!!

11.  When I finally told him about Indy, after putting it off for several days, he looked at me and said, “I think that makes me want to cry”, and so he did.  After a few minutes he said, “For my birthday I just want my Auntie to have a new dog so she won’t be sad anymore”.

12.  He remembers EVERYTHING.

13.  He has a great imagination and can play by himself with his “guys” for hours making up all kinds of games and stories.

14.  He loves to be read to and can remember how a story goes and even remember lots of the words after only hearing a book once.

15.  He loves to spend time with family.

16.  When he goes to bed he always makes sure that his stuffed animal’s heads are out of the blankets because “they need to breathe too”.

17.  He’s not a huge fan of anything sweet.  I love that we never have to fight about wanting candy in line at the grocery store or wanting cookies before bed!

18.  He really likes learning and when he finds a subject he is interested in the questions just keep coming!

19.  He can skip really well, which doesn’t come easily to everyone in our family!

20.  No matter how many times to remind him that the dog’s name is Pismo he still calls her “Kismo”.

I love this little boy so much!

Happy 5th Birthday, Thomas!

This day also belongs to my friend Raquel…

Indy Girl

Many of you know that Michele’s beloved dog, Indy, was hit by a car and passed away on Monday.  Our family has been shocked and saddened by the events that took place during the last 12 days of her life.

At this difficult time I cant help but think back of all the special times we’ve had with that little dog…

I remember when Michele and I went to Riverbank to buy her.  I was pregnant with Thomas and we both thought that every little boy needed a dog.  We chose a Boston Terrier because of the fond memories we have of our childhood dog, Chelsea.  At the breeder we chose the smallest puppy, a girl, with one blue eye and a crooked little tail.  We would eventually name her Indigo, a tribute to her one blue eye, but she would always be known as “Indy”.

When Thomas was born she was his constant companion.  she would lay by his crib while he was sleeping or snuggle next to you while you held him, she was already a great friend to him!

We will always remember how Indy flunked out of puppy school and was asked not to return!

Who can forget when she was chasing the lawn edger and almost got her toe cut off!  That was an expensive vet bill!

When Noelle was born Indy found a true friend!  Since she was tiny Noelle has LOVED Indy!

Noelle and indyI will admit that Indy did not always love this attention but she was always patient and gentle with Noelle.

Last February Indy ran away from home when she was scared by a tree trimmer at Michele’s house.  You can read about that ordeal here.  Indy made it home safe and sound about a week later.

indy with socksThis is Indy with her socks on recovering from her infected pads after running away.  Too cute!

indy and micheleIndy was a great friend and companion to Michele, who I know misses her so much.  We all do.

On New Year’s Eve Indy ran out of my Dad’s garage and was gone before we could even see which way she went.  The dog hunt was on immediately!  We had to find that dog before Michele and Thomas came home from Monterey.  Dad went out looking, Mom and Chris went out looking, Dave, Noelle and I went out looking, even Wanda and her mom helped with the search.  We hung up almost 200 posters with her picture asking people to call us if they had seen her.  We learned from the last time she was gone that she could be anywhere so we went to every surrounding neighborhood and some that were pretty far away.  No one had seen her and we didn’t get any phone calls.

Michele and Thomas came home on Saturday, the 2nd, and I had to deliver the awful news.  Of course, Michele was heart broken.  After crying a bit her first words were “ I guess I have to go out and find her.”  So, off she and I went to hang up more signs and check the pound.  Still nothing.  We couldn’t believe it.  Indy had her tags on plus she was wearing a tag saying that she had a microchip.  If someone had her or had seen her they should have been calling us.  Where could she be?

A break came in the case on the  3rd when the owner of a local convenience store told us that one of his frequent customers brought Indy in and said he had found her.  We began waiting for the call from the person who found her but it never came.  We continued to look for her and posted a reward for $300 in the store.  We thought anybody that would steal somebody’s dog might chose money over the dog but no call came.  We kept scouring the area near the store hoping we might see the man with Indy but had no luck.

Another break came on the 10th when the owner of the convenience store was able to tell us the name of the court the man lived in.  At that point we were so excited!  We would knock on every door if we had to or steal our own dog back out of someone’s back yard!  Monday the 11th, Dave and I drove through the court several times on our way home from work and stopped and talked with a man who said he hadn’t seen her.  We looked carefully under each fence to see if her little head was poking out but we didn’t see anything.  We even caught our friend Beth driving through looking for Indy!

Later that day Dad drove through the court and stopped and ate his lunch on the corner.  He saw a man riding a bike, which we were told this man did, but lost him in traffic.

Our good friend and neighbor, and dog lover, Rob who is a Sheriff’s K-9 Deputy, drove around the court several times that day and talked with a few neighbors.  He spent quite a lot of time there.  But still no leads.

I guess we didn’t see the man but he knew we were there because he got scared and let Indy loose sometime that afternoon.  Instead of calling us or dropping her off at a vet or the pound he just let her loose on the street!  What a Jerk!!!!!!!!

The calls started coming a little after 5:00 pm.  A lady had seen Indy running near Sandman Park.  She said she looked scared.  The hunt was on again!  Michele, Dad, Mom, and Chris were out looking everywhere but Indy was no where to be found.

Then around 6:15 the dreaded call came.  A man called Michele’s cell phone to say that Indy had been hit by a car at the corner of Lower Sacramento Road and Hammer Lane.  What?  How on earth did she get so far?  They rushed to the scene to see Indy laying in the street.  The nice man and his wife had parked their car to block traffic so she wouldn’t be hit again and another man was helping to direct traffic.

Things didn’t look good.  Indy was badly injured.  Dave and I got the call as I was on my way to sign Thomas up for T-Ball.  Michele was crying and crying.  What would we do?  It was late and all the vets were closed.  Once again I called on our awesome neighbors to find out the location of the emergency vet.  They rushed Indy there.  I met them there a few minutes later.

As we already knew the situation was critical.  They said they were not sure if she would make it through the night.  I can’t explain how it felt to see our little dog laying there on the table.  All we could do was cry and whisper in her ear that we loved her.  The vet sent us home so they could get to work with the promise they would update us soon.

We got one update about 8:00.  She would loose her eye, which we already knew.  That was cosmetic and the least of our worries.  She had a pneumo and might need a  chest tube.  She had lots of swelling on her brain and it was getting worse, not a good sign.

Then, around 9:00, the call came that Indy had passed away.

Mom and Chris took Michele to see her.

I can’t put into words what our family is feeling right now.  What an awful person that man was to take our dog for his own and then to just put her out on the street when he was afraid of getting into trouble.  I wish he could know the devastation he has caused.  On the other hand I am overwhelmed at the goodness of people as well.  The first lady that spotted Indy called us several more times that night to check on her.  The people that saw her get hit by the car called the vet 4 times that night and tried so hard to comfort Michele at the scene.  The people at the vet were so nice and helpful and I am so glad that they were there to comfort and care for Indy in the last hours of her life.

This incident has changed all of our lives

We will all miss Indy terribly but on some level are glad to have some closure, Indy’s life came to an abrupt end far too early but at least we don’t have to spend the rest of our lives wondering what happened to her.  It would be awful to have to wonder if she was out in the cold or being mistreated by that awful man!

Instead Indy went to the farm to play with Buttons, Chelsea, Buddy, and Taffy.

Christmas!

We had a fun and joyous Christmas season at the Mertz home!  We enjoyed many nights out looking at Christmas lights, Christmas crafts, Christmas cookies, and lots of time trying to teach the children the true meaning of the season.

Here are some pictures of our many celebrations with family…

We had a great Holiday!  One of the best parts was surprising our parents with the news that we are having a baby!  We put a picture of the kids in a frame with a drawing (done horribly by me) of a baby with them and a bib that said “Baby’s first Christmas” in a gift box.  It was fun watching them try to figure out what that meant!

Catch Up!

Talk about being a little behind with my blogging!  I have been meaning to put pictures up of our family vacation for like a month….

One night Dave and I were watching TV and trying to think of something to do with the kids during our week off of work.  The Bay Bridge was closed so, that ruled out anything in the Bay Area since it would not only be harder to get the but the traffic would horrendous as well.  It was November but there wasn’t any snow yet in the mountains so that was out.  Pismo Beach seemed too far… So, we went with our old stand by: Monterey!  We had to leave the next morning but being the excellent packer that I am it all worked out and we were on the road by 10:00!

The weather was great and that meant that Dave had to take the kids in the ocean! We learned at the Aquarium that the water in Monterey is actually warmer in the winter than the summer, who knew?

We had a really GROSS dinner at a restaurant on the wharf!  If you ever see this statue do not go in!!!!

We had an awesome time at the Aquarium!  It was fun to watch Thomas sit quietly while the volunteers gave  presentations but even more fun when I realized later that he was actually listening and remembered what they said.

It was great fun and one of the best vacations we’ve taken as a family.  We were laid back and relaxed, we didn’t stress about a time schedule, we let the kids stay up late, we ate too many caramel apples, it was magical!

Epiphany, Part II

I hope that whomever is out there reading this is not expecting an incredible advancement in the theory of home economics because I simply don’t have one.  What I have discovered in the past few weeks is a system that works for our family.  The lists that I was so afraid of making are now not so scary.  I modified the system a little to meet my needs.  Here’s what I came up with:

At the beginning of each two week period I make a list of recipes that I want to make for dinner, a mix of old stand bys and new experiments.  I don’t assign the recipes a day that way I don’t feel too pressured to make that specific item if I don’t feel like it or someone’s sick or whatever.  Dinner time can still be a little hectic but I am feeling much better about it.

I have taken the same approach with the housework.  I make a mental list of all the things I want to accomplish and work on a few things a day until all of the chores are done for the week.  This has been working out really well and I don’t feel stressed or grumpy when cleaning.  And the house actually stays so much cleaner!   I grew up with the typical “clean the entire house on Saturday morning” routine and so I always thought I had to do everything all at once.  Now that I know I can’t do it all at once and I have to do a little at a time I am so much happier!

I have reluctantly decided to stop doing the laundry every two weeks and start doing it every Monday.  The laundry is my least favorite chore so I always did it as least often as possible and no one needed it done more often than that anyway.  But, I thought  doing it more often would be less time consuming and less irritating.

So, there you have it!  Nothing even remotely fascinating or exciting.  Just some small changes in one mom’s life that have made a huge difference!  Here is a list of some of the things that I have learned since starting my journey:

-  Laundry, like people you don’t particularly care for, is better tolerated in small doses.

-  The vacuum cleaner handle that had been duct taped together for the past three years was not broken but just put together wrong!  It is now duct tape free and working great.

-  Recipes written for moms include way too much canned soup, Bisquick, and instant rice!

-  Simple Green really is awesome at taking the grease stains out of clothing!  This stuff is amazing!  It even takes out old stains that have been through the wash several times already.  A real clothing saver!

As a treat for another long post enjoy some pictures of our trip to Countryside Farms with Thomas’ preschool class.

Getting Ready

We’ve had lots of fun getting ready for Halloween!  Thomas and Noelle have both been enjoying the decorations in the house.HPIM3168

We had a great evening sharing dinner with friends last Thursday  My homemade pumpkin cupcakes with spider web decorations were a hit with the kids.

They were good but a little to “cakey” for me, I like a thinner pancake.   If anybody has a good recipe send it to me!

Epiphany

I hate to do the laundry.  I mostly just hate putting it away.  I hate hanging up all of Noelle’s little dresses and finding the little panties that go with each one to hang them up as a set.  I hate that there are always matchless socks.  I hate carrying mass amounts of laundry up and down the stairs.

I hate to clean the house.  I love for things to be clean and organized but I hate making it that way.  I hate that when I clean I feel angry at the people who made the messes.  I hate that I  always put everything off until the day before I go back to work so that I feel rushed and anxious about getting it all done.

I hate dinner.  I don’t hate cooking nor do I hate eating nor do I hate spending time with the family at the table, in fact I love all of those things.  I hate trying to figure out WHAT is for dinner.  What do we have time for, what I have the ingredients for, what will be creative and delicious.  I’m so sick of all of our staples and I have been staying away from all convenience and prepackaged foods in an attempt to not only teach our children about healthy eating but also in an attempt to give them a more refined palette.

I thought and thought and thought about all of these things for a few months….

Then my good friend Beth put a post on Facebook about how she was having an epiphany and I decided that I would have one too!

I had heard of other people making menus for the week (like my awesome neighbors) or even the MONTH (like crazy Christina, miss you!), but I never thought that would fit my lifestyle.  I had also heard of people making schedules for their housekeeping, like Brandi, http://dillydabbler.blogspot.com/search/label/house%20keeping , who has inspired me several times even though I have never met her!

If you know me you know ILOVE LISTS!  I am the listy-est person I know.  I was very hesitant about making these lists though because if I write it down it must be done!  I was very worried that if I started making weekly menus or chore lists and then didn’t complete them I would feel like a failure and then I would be worse off than I already was!!

After thinking about it forever I just decided to go for it, to let my epiphany take over my life.  I needed new direction and a purpose!  I work 72 hours in 6 consecutive days so that I can spend 8 full days at home with our children.  But I found that a lot of those days were wasted running around doing errands or other days just lounging around feeling bored.  I wanted to shake up my life!

I know you’re thinking, with a menu?

This is the longest post ever!  So, I’ll finish by telling you I have been working my epiphany for a month or so and I’ll blog in a few days about how it’s going.

As a treat for sticking around this long, here’s Pismo!  She’s growing like a weed and contrary to what Dave might tell you she is not the most dimwitted dog on the planet!HPIM3163
